I have same problem with a fresh install of KDE neon stable (KDE 5.9.3, KF
5.32, Qt 5.7.1).
Used gtalk (google) connection. In my case the textarea rarely (approx every
10th  times) getting visible on new chat window, but only when someone else
pops it up (writes to me when no chat window is open).
