I consider that a workaround.

The benefit of our approach is considerably less memory usage when you don't
have the list open. I don't want to throw away one of our best features because
of a technical issue, especially for one that I don't see.

3-10 seconds seems ridiculously high.
can you run 
"time ktp-contactlist --nofork"

Where is the delay? Before you see the window? Seeing the contacts load? 
Also could you confirm your version number. There's an option in the menu
"About Contact List"
