I'd like to point out one thing, that has not been raised so far - who are our
target users and would they be happy with or without the option? Would they be
happy with 1 or 2 lines as default? Answers to these questions should drive the
final decision.

We are actually not removing the option, there is no option. And just as you
said, too many options are overwhelming. Soon we'll be arguing for 5th option
to have a send button...6th option to configure the content of context menu,
because, why not? Yes, we as developers sometimes do know better. After all,
it's our job and we do it, well, because we do know better.

I'm with Thomas on this one.
