I found very useful the kopete "custom notification" option.
I've used this option very often, for example:
1) when I'm wating for a contact goes online, I change the "contact gone
online" sound so when I hear it, I know this contact is now online
2) I've changed the sound of incoming message for people  that work with me, so
when  I'm at work I know if a message is related to the work or is from a
friend.
