It definitely happens after being idle for some time - e.g. it just happened
again after I returned to the computer after typing a text. So the correlation
with powerdevil Falmarri saw might just be a coincidence - maybe power
management causes telepathy to set the away status? 

@Falmarri: Does it disconnect you immediately when the display dims, or does it
happen, as it does here, right when you become active again?
