Yes, jpeg works fine for me. However, it did not work with the same
tarballs I made and distributed for at least one person.

Which leads me to believe that you should check the paths in
~/.qt/qt_plugi*? If something seems fishy (like old paths), try nuking
the whole directory and see if that works (you might have to exit KDE,
nuke, and then start) ...
