I believe this is true on Sparc, but definitely not on x86, which is my 
case. I've been using them for years, and they definitely work better 
for me than Sun's in most of the cases.

I think the only thing I'm using that definitely doesn't like them is 
cdrtools.
For many other packages, they allow to use MMX or 3DNow! optimisations.
