I have managed to install the fcpackage.2_1 on SPARC/Solaris 7,
using gcc-3.2.2. If it does anything good to my system, besides
satisfying required build dependencies, I cannot tell yet :-(

I had to perform 'make install' manually because the install.sh
gave me "Permission denied" messages. This despite of running
as root.

And you have to install in the following order:
 1 - fontconfig (via ./configure, make -n install & installing manually)
2 - Xrender	(via xmkmf, after tweaking , make install)
 3 - Xft	(via	setenv CC "gcc -D__STDc__"; ./configure)

I went through all that just to find out that they had released
fontconfig 2.2. So I ripped everything out again and installed
that release in the following order:

 1 - fontconfig	( ./configure, make, make install )
 2 - render	( ./configure, make, make install )
3 - Xrender	( had to add X11/extensions/extutil.h found in the
		  fcpackage.2_1 archive, ./configure, make,
		  make install )
 4 - Xft	( ./configure, make, make install )
