I missed the deadline for applying, but can I still work on one of the projects without mentoring?

I have an idea for a new feature in KDE and I thought this would be a good
chance to try to get it approved but I missed the deadline. I know that
mentoring won't be possible after all applicants have already been chosen,
but can I still work on a feature and submit it once I'm done? The feature
I wanted to add wasn't on the list of suggestions. I wanted to add the
ability to set a qstylesheet file (such as style.qss) as the global
application style. This would greatly increase the amount of themes
available for KDE, make it possible for users to tweak themes themselves,
and make it easier to include custom icons/images with themes if
necessary by using the url() function in the stylesheet. It would also make
it easier for experienced developers who can make KDE themes in C++ to make
multiple, more complex themes in less time. The feature would also be very
easy to make and would probably take less than 1 Megabyte of total storage.

I found GSoC earlier this year and assumed the deadline was the first day
of summer. I'm sorry for missing the deadline, but I won't be too much
trouble for anyone and I just want to finish this one feature. I can get
started on it as soon as it's approved. Thanks!
