After mid-term: Akademy

Hello students (past and present)
Now that the mid-terms are over and you're all working, but before we tell
you the results of the mentor surveys, I'd like to talk about a much more
interesting subject: Akademy 2008.
I am not sure we approached this subject before, but you all as KDE
contributors are invited to the yearly KDE contributors conference in
Europe, Akademy. It will take place in Belgium in less than a month. For
more information on the event itself, please go to
http://akademy2008.kde.org.
Like I said, you are all invited, regardless of the mid-term results. It's
a great opportunity to meet your mentor face-to-face and discuss the
final touches to your code with him/her. It's also very nice to meet
other KDE developers as well as other students, to get their impressions
of Summer of Code, of KDE development in general and, why not, the (bad)
publicity KDE is getting. Oh, and to have a beer with them.
For us, you spending a week or half a week in Akademy is more important
than finishing the code. The reason is simple: you are far more valuable
to us as a long-term contributor than the code you're producing just now.
And if coming to Akademy helps you feel like you belong, thus making you
want to stay, then we definitely want you there. All mentors know about
this and will not "take marks off" because you spent some time in Belgium
with us.
I know it's kind of late to start planning for a trip, but give it a try.
The KDE e.V. Board of Directors (kde-ev-board at kde.org) and the Akademy
organisation team can help with any bureaucratic issue you may face. They
may even be able to help financially, if necessary, but this is something
you have to discuss with them directly.
