It should be clearly communicated that "allowing offline commits" also 
is a very huge advantage of git over svn because it allows us to commit 
changes even if we are offline for whatever reasons (e.g. if we are on a 
train or plane or in some area with bad internet connection). In fact, 
this feature might even allow people to contribute who do not have 
internet connection at home, e.g. students especially in non-highly 
industrialized countries.

Also, we do already have the problem you describe as community 
splitting. That's exactly what is already happening with all those 
developers who do already use Git locally (via git-svn). In fact, the 
change to Git might make this less of a problem because then those 
developers can easily share their Git branches with the rest of the 
community. In the end it depends more on the personal workflow and the 
personal preferences of the contributors than on the tool used for SCM 
whether they share their ongoing work with the rest of the community or 
not.
