Solution: don't backport. (at least, let that be the exception, not the rule)

Work in the stable branch and fix stuff there. And merge the stable branch into 
the development branch. You know, just like Qt.

If you change the stable branch, you should be really careful and test it. I 
mean, who backports stuff and doesn't test that the fix worked?
