I know it's not really proper git policy, but why don't you simply checkout 
the remote branch? git will advice you it's not a really good thing, but since 
you're not using it to commit anything or do any local modification, you won't 
(99% sure) encounter any problems.
And you avoid the overlapping-names problem. :-)
