Git now by default also hard-links local clones, although only the 
repository data, not the working copy. But with git it is even safe to just 
cp -al an entired repository including its working copy, as long as your 
editor breaks hard links when it safes files (which Kate, for example, does 
not, IIRC).

I'm confident that we can get hard-linked repositories even on Windows as 
long as you are on NTFS.
