Which route? Importing as one big module and then splitting up? As opposed
to importing in split modules?
What's the difference to you if the end result is the same?

This can be automated with a script. It's not even difficult to write one
to do it.

Maybe it isn't. I have no idea what format of data the .gitmodule file
should have.
