If you can code C++ at all, one good way is to find a bug in an application 
and hunt it down, while talking to the app author. In bugzilla (bugs.kde.org) 
we have marked some bugs as "junior jobs" (called "JJs") where the app author 
is willing to mentor someone working on that (minor) bug or wish. Search for 
them -- I think there's even a special link from the bugs frontpage.

Being able to say "I am interested in Foo" is a big step in helping out. That 
could be an annoyingly formatted dialog (be careful though: pretending you're 
a "usability expert" because you think a dialog is ugly is a road filled with 
pain) or inconsistent options. Coming to grips with the tools (Subversion, 
mainly) is another important step.
