Stefan has excellent suggestions, as always. For applications work it's best 
and easiest if you have an idea of what you want to do yourself -- it's very 
hard to steer people into doing work they're not interested in doing. Talk to 
individual application maintainers.

Connectiva, now Mandriva, is of course a big player in .br and there is sure 
to be a lot you can do with or through them, and the pt_BR translation team 
can probably use some help as well.
