kde build - configuring desktop

Hi 

I used the step-by-step instructions to build kde from source. It seemed to go 
ok, I built arts, kdelibs and kdecore, and I'm able to run kde from the 
build. However, when I run kcontrol, the control centre is empty, and using 
the menu editor to add items to the K menu seems to have no effect. Do I need 
another module in order to configure my desktop? or is there something else I 
have to do?
