What I started out with was writing panel applets, as they're not generally
too deep in the Qt/KDE magic, and they're practically simple by definition.
KDevelop has a template for building the applets, which I'd recommend taking
advantage of.

If you decide to go further in KDE programming, I would recommend getting to
know the autotools (automake, autoconf, etc.), and get to know Qt Designer as
well.

I would recommend reading some of the mailing list archives, especially
kde-devel. Often times a question will get answered with a real jewel. In
fact, it would be an interesting project to go through the archives and
compile a list of all the fantastic advice given on the various mailing
lists. Of course, I have no time to do so at this point, but it would still
be a great thing, I think.

There's also some projects for the KDE Quality project which are not too
involved, and make good starter projects. See the wiki
(http://wiki.kdenews.org/) and the Quality homepage (http://quality.kde.org/)
for more details.
