Eric Raymond also created a guide, but I couldn't find it after a quick Google 
serach.

Well, don't pick a bug that you can't work on.  What you might want to do is 
search for a suitable bug that has a lot of votes on it.  Or pick an 
application you'd like to get familiar with, and find a bug for it you can 
work on.

You don't even have to work on bugs.  Documentation and such doesn't require 
fixing programming errors.  Maybe you can work on What's This help for an 
application lacking it.  From what I understand, it's not hard to add.  There 
should be a tutorial somewhere about that.

Well, I just asked something to that effect myself.  When you first starting 
contributing to a large open-source project, it can be hard just to know 
where to start.
