Why don´t you use LPRng (http://www.lprng.com/)? It is absolutely 
compatible to LPD, it is under active development, much more secure, 
integrates better with Foomatic (http://www.linuxprinting.org/), has 
bi-di support (printer status check, page accounting with hardware 
counter, ...), will sone ghav propagation of printer capability 
information from servers to clients via PPD files (similar to CUPS), ...
