question about printing to postscript printers

Hello All

I've been trying for weeks to get the KDE printing system to print to our
lpr-based UNIX print servers but without any luck. It's impossible to
specify a driver for a specific printer as there are several on one queue,
all different, and the server does loadlevelling to send the postscript to
the least-busy printer.

This used to work fine with the old lpr rig in Linux and BSD, but no
longer with CUPS. Is this expected? Would the lpr plugin the KDE print
team is trying to solicit try to solve this problem. Is there no way with
KDEprint to send postscript files to a generic network postscript printer?

Insight appreciated. Maybe I can help if I can get my brain around the
problem.

Thanks - JB
