Not a solution by itself, but if you have the opportunity, could you
try a KDE-3.1.x release?

A backtrace would also be helpful. Use gdb to generate it:

1) start "gdb $KDEDIR/bin/kprinter"
2) at gdb prompt, type "run file.txt" (replace file.txt by an existing
   text file)
3) do the needed steps to freeze kprinter, then get back to the gdb
   prompt and stop the execution with CTRL-C
4) type "bt" at gdb prompt to get the backtrace
