Thanks for the additional information Francesco. Unfortunately, searching for
"QPrinterNG" suggests that the plan of improving the situation for KDE 4.8
never came to fruition (and the Feature Plan for 4.9 doesn't appear to include
anything along those lines, either:
http://techbase.kde.org/Schedules/KDE4/4.9_Feature_Plan).

I don't print very often, so the status quo is a minor irritation rather than a
huge problem for me, but it would still be very nice to see this fixed. (I
suspect many developers are in the same situation of only rarely printing
things out, hence the historical lack of attention to critical printing
problems like this one)
