The global Fontmap would only solve the problem for fonts installed system-wide. For fonts installed into $HOME, the foomatic-rip patch mentioned in comment #23 is required. Anyway, the KDE4 font installer no longer creates Fontmap files, and the KDE3.5 one has a config option that is turned off by default...
