I cannot confirm this on 3 different systems, they all work for me:

  GoboLinux 013 w. KDE 3.5.3 (Live CD)
  openSUSE 10.0 w. KDE 3.5.5
  Knoppix 5.1.0 w. KDE 3.5.5 (Live CD)

This is likely a (configuration/compile) bug in your (local) Gentoo system.
