  Yeah, an app's icon is a part of its branding. It //should// look distinctive, not generic. Ideally it communicates both its purpose ("I'm a text editor!") as well as its identity ("I'm Kate!"). I think the problem with some of these icons is that they on;y do the former, not the latter.
  
  The fact that we have a consistent visual style for Breeze icons is already something that builds the KDE brand. But that doesn't require that individual app icons are generic-looking and lack identity for the apps themselves.
