It's printed whenever KCrash is invoked (SIGSEGV, SIGABRT, ...) to preserve 
any unsaved emails. Even if KMail aborts (e.g. qFatal from Qt, Frameworks, 
Akonadi, KMail itself ...) we still want to preserve unsaved emails, so no, 
it's not bogus :-)

I don't have any kmail.rc file myself in any of my environments.

The only file I have is $XDG_DATA_DIRS/kxmlgui5/kmail2/kmail_part.rc - is your 
XDG_DATA_DIRS correct?

Can you share the backtrace and kmail terminal output?
