I'd rather do it now for two reasons:

a) for reliable symbol tracking I need not ignore symbol retractions that break ABI without getting a sobump. pretty much a policy thing.
b) if we end up forgetting to bump, kittens will die! which is why I have that policy. by not bumping now we open ourselves to human error :P

So I'd rather bump when the break occurs which is more in line with CI workflows since right now I consider distro level integration failing because this library has broken ABI compatibility.

There isn't really a disadvantage to bumping now. What is in master is no longer soversion 5 and since we have not released soversion 6 there are no compatibility assumptions about it at this point.
