Hmm, don't think so, but I can be sure.

As far as I can tell state() will return Broken if there is a version 
mismatch.
But that shouldn't happen on a system that deploys both server and client from 
packages.

On the other hand that is something that akonadictl cannot run into because it 
is part of the server package (and likely doesn't even check the protocol 
version).
