Well and I just pressed download POP3 mails again while reading this thread 
and the new mails just appeared nicely in the thread while KMail was fully 
responsive and I could continue to read the mail I was currently reading.

And since I switched just now again, I do know the jerky behavior of KMail-1 
in those situations. So I think doing the heavy lifting in the background is 
actually a good idea.
