According to Volker, this is likely a proxy model issue.

Any issue that shows mail is there, but cannot be read because it does not 
show up in the summary, and requires a full restart of Kontact to get to it, 
in my view is breaking user experience.

This was introduced between 4.9.5 and 4.10 RC, so hopefully will be 
comparatively easy to track down.
