I don't think anyone argues against ownCloud, in particular.
But there are a lot of CalDAV servers out there, and it's generally an
issue of the *server* to make sure to provide the data in the
appropriate way for the respective client as long as that client is

The same is true for other solutions.
If groupware is what you're after, you might consider using an actual
groupware server. Add WebDAV, for which there are multiple options,
starting from a simple Apache setup that also allows synchronization via
SVN, and you have much the same set of functionality you describe.
