For people interested, the problem from the top of my head:
With this patch aplied and no unread articles the icon flashes multipple times in the systemtray.
This is because when checking for new articles a temporary article is made to compare for changes.
The temp article has the property unread. This makes the akregator icon appear for a split seconds.
The result is an annoyingly flashing icon every time it fetches articles.

To solve this some core changes are needed (I think) and lots of testing.
