I assume you took a look at
         
	The IMAP NOTIFY Extension
	https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5465

and

	IMAP4 Extensions for Quick Mailbox Resynchronization
	https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5162

in combination with

    
	IMAP Extension for Conditional STORE Operation          
	https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4551

as a way of achieving much the same goal with much fewer connections and less 
bandwidth? 

Please keep in mind we are also trying to keep that IMAP agent capable of 
being used on mobile connections. Having potentially hundreds of open 
connections seems like a sure way to burn through the battery on notebooks, 
tablets, and phones quickly, not to mention potential connection cost.
