- do not remove any items from the model (unless they are deleted); only 
add items (i.e. new incoming mail); update the model/search folder on 
explicit refresh only (F5 or change of folder)

FWIW, the latter is more or less how KMail 1 behaves if you filter the 
view by Unread or New except that KMail 1. This is special-cased for 
Unread/New in KMail 1. Marking/unmarking a message as Important or 
Action Item causes an immediate update of the filtered view.
