simontouch does that to display mails of a given user (mail address):

(have a look at messageCollectionSearchJobFinished())

This creates persistent search folders that will be automatically updated.

The code is more/less reverse engineered out of mailcommons SearchRule / 
SearchPattern so all credit goes to those guys of course.
