Bless you, Kevin.  That could be a life-server.  I was getting hung up
on complexities such as the IMAP server not being on the same
partition as those backups, but since I have a local mount to it, I
pointed a Maildir resource to that (read-only, as you suggested) and
all the important messages are there.  What's more, once search is
fixed they will be searchable :-)
