Distributions should pick the latest release of akonadi IMO. Those compiling 
from source should do that as well. :)
I'm not sure if akonadi is included in the official releases or not, though 
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/4.7.1/src/ shows it is not.
This makes sense as akonadi server is independent of KDE (in software 
sense).
