I think IMAP is usually quite reasonable. It takes mutt about 10 seconds
on my laptop to validate flags and display LKML folder in threaded view
with ~100K mails in it if it does not need to rebuild its index. Of
course if there are several thousand emails that it hasn't seen before
and needs to fetch headers for and add to the index, it takes a bit
longer.
