Obviously it does that in order to keep the connection alive, but I don't know
why the connection should be kept alive rather than re-established when
needed.
Well reconnecting is slower for sure, so in the case of online imap it would
make kmail a bit less reactive.
In the case of cached imap, though, the overall sync can take a long time, so
what's an additional "open connection" at the beginning...
