Actually you just have to install the binutils-gold package and then
the GNU ld is replaced with the Gold ld executable.
Debian is smart here and uses a symlink that points either to ld.bfd or
ld.gold, so you can easily switch between these two linkers.
Stephen told me that in (k)ubuntu binutils-gold overwrites the linker from
the binutils package. So if you want to switch back to GNU ld you have to
reinstall the binutils package.
After the installation the build process will use the Gold linker transparently,
no further configuration required.
