No, you can't switch of Nepomuk for PIM only. What you can do is disable 
Strigi file indexing, that is usually the worst performance indicator.

KMail also has some problems with Nepomuk, see 
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=219687. These have been partly fixed 
already, we are working on fixing them even more.
