Thanks, Kevin - I think that's the problem. The strange thing is, until updates to in the last couple of weeks, Akonadi didn't have any problems recognising the KAlarm mime types despite them not being installed properly. Perhaps things are being done more correctly now in the libraries, and it's caught me out.
