[Kde-pim] akonadi won't connect to external mysql server

If I start akonadi with the default private server, it starts OK. Since I
already run mysql this is a waste of resources so I changed the config to use
the external server. akonadiserverrc contains:

[%General]
Driver=QMYSQL

[QMYSQL]
Name=akonadi
User=root
Password=********
Options="UNIX_SOCKET=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock"
ServerPath=/usr/sbin/mysqld
StartServer=false
Host=localhost

[Debug]
Tracer=null

But when I try to start akonadi I get:

$ [akonadiserver] Unable to open database "Unknown database 'akonadi' QMYSQL:
Unable to connect"

The test dialog shows akonadi is not registsred with dbus but dbus is running.
Anyone any idea why the external server causes this problem?

TIA
-Robin
