"Navigation Panel" rather than "* Pane" I'd call it then, and I feel support
from Merriam-Webster too in this regard since a panel there is defined as a
"seperate or distinct part of a surface" [1].

I think a pane has more a major character like the different window panes in
KMail that are the "Message Preview Pane" the "Folder List" and the "Message
List".

I even found a Wikipedia page that supports my point of view :) [2]

In this case I'd rather go for "Navigation Panel" because quite in contrary to
what I believed only a few moments ago

1) the user "navigates" through Kontacts components
2) there is also the "Navigator ToolBAR" and toolbars in general and (many)
users are used to moving "bars" around which they cannot do with that "area
within the red rectangle"

So we should distinct between what's a "Bar" and what's a "Pane" or "Panel"
though I'd vote for Panel.

Any other input?
Manfred
