You are right... MDNs are not only read receipts, but also notifications when 
a mail is deleted, forwarded, etc. So I think simply naming it "read receipt" 
is not OK.
I am not a usability person though, so this might not be the best opinion.

BTW, it is indeed taken from an RFC, see RFC 2298, section 3.2.6.1 - 3.2.6.3 
for details about what MDNs can do.
