I suspect that KMail does this already on its own. At least, 
regeneration of the index files would explain why the message 
flag "sent" is lost.

Thomas's suggestion to use a filter for "editting" the messages is the 
only solution perserving the message flag information. In fact, I'm 
using exactly this filter since ages.
