Hello guys,
local, i.e. desktop search is an important topic in current development and
research, not only in the Nepomuk project. Projects like Beagle, Tracker, or
Strigi and efforts to create a unified interface such as Wasabi show that
also the open-source community is working on this task. The Nepomuk project
and more specific Beagle++ aim to even improve the idea of local search as it
is used at the moment by semantic information based on RDF storage. This not
only increases the power of the whole desktop search system but also
increases the complexity of the search problem in general. In addition
to "simple" text search and pattern matching the semantic information allows
to exploit relations between resources which raises the need for new search
interfaces. Since the focus of the Nepomuk project is to establish standard
interfaces which also includes the local search it is a natural step to
coordinate this effort with other standardization projects such as Wasabi to
create one powerful interface and querying language that fulfills the need of
both the open-source community and the Nepomuk project. This workshop is
intended to bring the different local search projects and standardization
effort at one table and coordinate their efforts. The goals of the worksshop
thus can be summarized as:
* Create an API for integrated Fulltext and semantic (i.e. RDF) search (based
on Wasabi)
* Find a good solution for metadata storage and indexing based on RDF. The
actual problem here is the combination of a metadata store and a fulltext
index and how to distribute queries among them.
* Coordinate the way metadata is stored, i.e. artificial resource URIs vs.
identifiers to make sure data created by the different crawling systems is
compatible. The biggest part of this problem is already solved by the
ontologies, however, details may need closer inspection.
On the workshop wiki page [1] you can find a preliminary time table and a list
of participants. This list reflects whom we would like to attend. Since the
list does not only contain people from the Nepomuk project we will probably
have to do the workshop on a weekend. The current proposal is the weekend of
the 21st and 22nd of April. Please let us know if you will be able to attend.
We did not fix the date yet and are open for changes in this early state of
planning.
The workshop will take place at DERI [2] in Galway, Ireland. If you are not
part of the Nepomuk project and need sponsoring please contact us directly.
Cheers,
Tudor Groza (DERI) and Sebastian Trueg (Edge-IT)
