That black magic we over at the SpamAssassin camp encountered first hand 
when users started to complain why so few mem is shown as "shared" between 
the spamd children.  In the end Justin found out that we could indeed be 
better at that point but also that some kernels do show different numbers 
than others; his monologue on our Bugzilla is pretty interesting, 
especially this [1] comment.
